Russian scientist Andrei Nikolaevitych Belozersky isolates pure DNA.
1973-Recombinant DNA Created
The idea for man-made DNA, or rDNA , came from grad student at Stanford Medical School.
1975-Asilomar Conference
Biologist, lawyers, and doctors had a conference to create guidelines for the safety of genetically engineering.
1982-FDA Approves First GMO
The first GMO, Humulin, that was produced by E.coli bacteria is put on the market.
1994-GMO Hits Grocery Stores
The Flavr Savr tomato is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and is sold in grocery stores. The tomato was engineered to have a longer shelf life.
1996-GMO-Resistant Weeds
Weeds were found in Australia that were resistant to glyphosate, the herbicide used with many GMO crops. The weeds found are seven to eleven times more resistant to glyphosate than the standard susceptible population.
1999-GMO Crops Dominate
Over 100 million acres of plant worldwide are planted with genetically engineered seeds.
2011-GMO-Resistant Pests Appear
Bt toxins were found in pregnant women in eastern Quebec. This shows that the toxin is passed to fetuses.
